The moon sand my kids have was a store-bought Christmas present from an awesome aunt, but the internet is filled with DIY versions, such as this one from Familylicious:
Once you have a shallow pan filled with sand, add some dinosaur eggs and small dinosaurs. We use fake pearls from a necklace that broke, and the boys think they make perfect eggs. Our small dinosaurs are from a Dollar store pack.
For our one-year-old, this is enough and he will spend a good hour absorbed in this activity. He loves experimenting with burying the dinosaurs, making them talk, hiding eggs and digging them up. He spends lots of time just being fascinated by the different effects the tools have on the sand.
We periodically check the tally and count up the lines to see how many eggs he’s found. (He loves to dramatically return the eggs to their mama dinosaurs. Thanks for that, Diego.)
I would love to know if your children try this activity, and any variations you come up with!
